Charles M. “Butch” Cuthriell III, 68, died unexpectedly November 10, 2011.
Butch, a native of Portsmouth, Va., was retired in 1994 from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard as a shop planner after 33 years of service. He was currently employed by My Blind Spot as a window blind installer. A 1961 graduate of Churchland High School, he was involved in sports his entire life. He served as District Administrator for Little League Baseball District-6 for 24 years. He had formerly coached Pop Warner Football at Olive Branch and had served as Commissioner of Parks and Recreation for the City of Portsmouth. He was honored as the Portsmouth Sports Club’s Sportsman of the Year in 1994. Butch was an avid golfer with two holes-in-one to his credit, a longtime member of Elizabeth Manor Golf Club and an active member of "The Thursday Night Prayer Meeting". He was a member of St. Therese’s Catholic Church and Past Grand Knight of Knights of Columbus Council 418 where his dedicated service will be sorely missed.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Margaret Hedrick Cuthriell; his daughter, Gail C. Williams and husband, Brian; his son, Michael J. Cuthriell of Kill Devil Hills, N.C.; three grandchildren, Sierra Williams, Maggie Williams and Olivia Cuthriell Hampton and her mother Courtney Hampton; three sisters, Jo Ann Guinan and husband Frank, Peggy C. Miltier and husband Steve, Susan C. Patrick and husband Tony; a brother, Richard D. Cuthriell; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Therese’s Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth. Friends may join the family Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. with a Christian Wake Service to be held at 7 p.m. at Baker-Foster Funeral Home, 5685 Lee Farm La., Suffolk, Va. The Rosary will be recited at 5:30 pm before the visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his honor to the Knights of Columbus Home, 519 County Street, Portsmouth, VA. 23704.
